Book Club: The Last Lecture

Last week we had another book club meeting. I must say, I'm enjoying book club so very much. I encourage anyone with a love of books or a like of books to join a book club. Ours is an open book club, anyone can come, and our numbers are growing by word of mouth. It's so fun to meet and share one another's impressions and thoughts of a book and then be influenced by the thoughts of others.

This last book was The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch (you can see my review of the book here). The discussion was a great one. We talked about our impressions of the book, childhood dreams, satisfaction with life and how we can keep our dreams alive - even if they change.

Some of my childhood dreams were: become an Astronaut for NASA, be a teacher, a conductor of a symphony, and a mother. Although some of my dreams haven't come true, lots of them have or have morphed into something attainable and suited more to my current situation.

So what are some of your childhood dreams, how have they changed and what do you do to keep the dream alive?

  1. I had lots of childhood dreams of course, but I can't think of any that really stuck long-term. At various times, I had plans to be an actress, a teacher, a ballerina, a lawyer, a runaway, and Miss America.

And a mom. That one stuck, I suppose. I think I mentioned this the other night, but when I was little (like 8 or 9) I used to keep an eye out for abandoned babies I could raise as my own. Oddly, I never found any.

When I was in college, I thought it was hilarious to wear a toe ring on my left foot and say I was engaged to a podiatrist. It was a joke, but I secretly kept my eyes peeled for an attractive, single podiatrist. Oddly, I never found any.

My grown up dreams are to write a book and get a PhD.

  2. I get to read this book soon with my work and then we'll all discuss it. I'm excited, he sounds like he has a lot of good things to say.

I must say I'm pretty impressed with your house and yard and how much it seems to be coming along! You guys are awesome!

  3. I wanted to be a librarian. Done! Just kidding! Really, though, I did want to be a librarian. Dorky but true. I watched a video of this guy's lecture and it brought me to tears. I bought the book but haven't had the chance to read it just yet.

  4. Your book club sounds like a lot more fun than any I have ever belonged to. We always have a "leader" that goes through the book commenting on her highlighted parts. There was never a lot of discussion...just her views. I would love to be in a good book club where everyone could express their impressions and conclusions.
