Last weekend Abygail and I went to a play called Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business put on by the Theatre of Youth. The play said the appropriate ages were for 4+ so I thought it would be a good time to take Abygail to a play (and it was free... that helped to persuade me as well). We arrived with time to spare and looked around the building. It's a historic theater here and it's architecture inside was fabulous. It's been restored and you can tell that it's well loved. We were not very close to the stage but it's a small theater so we could stills see everything but some parts were hard to hear over the music. Music? What... did I forget to mention it was a musical???
Yeah, it was a musical, which was a bonus in my book (and I think Aby's too).
It turned out to be so much fun. I laughed so much and really enjoyed myself. I didn't think that Abygail got much out of it though. She was squirming and not watching the stage very much. After the play they let the kids in the audience ask the actors questions. One of the questions was, "Was the baby real?" (there is a baby in the story if you've read the book). They told us no, it was just a doll but we hold it so that it looks like a real baby. Well, that's the part that stuck in Abygail's head. I would ask her "how did you like the play?" She would say, "but it wasn't a real baby, it was just a doll."
When we got home I was a bit disappointed that Abygail hadn't enjoyed it more. Then she started telling everyone about it with little details I didn't think she even saw and then started doing some of the singing and dancing. Well, needless to say it turned out to be a hit with her too.
I wish we had a picture of our special day together, all dressed up for our special afternoon. But we didn't think about it (and our camera was broken, was).
Sounds like a very memorable mother daughter outing! Good for you!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I'm sure she'll always remember it!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome thing to do with your daughter... I'll have to remember that one. :)
ReplyDeleteI love Junie B. Jones! Most teachers don't as a general rule because they are told from a 5-6 year old's perspective using a 5-6 year old's language. But I say, you know what? Kids like them and they are reading them. And having fun doing it. I'm glad you gals had a good time. :)
